My Whole Intention
I
believe I can call myself a writer only if I am able
to transmit my experiences to others. Whenever I am
trying to write a book, there is only one means leading
to my goal, that is, uncovering my life and telling
it in my own way.

When
one is editing a book the first step is finding
individual identity in it. Then the book becomes
yours, you enjoy it, and you suffer along with
it. Such was my process with Juan Cavila
& His Childhood Memories. This unique character
stamps his message by leading us through the
road of childhood up to the wonderful world
of sugar cane and tobacco. This description
of customs and manners, pertaining to the Spanish
costumbrista genre, reflects what a child –notwithstanding
his age– is capable of feeling, dreaming and
intending.

Juan
Cavila & his childhood memories, is both an autobiography
and a description of Cuban customs and manners. The
book is autobiography of a childhood –that difficult
stage– specially if there is poverty around; however
–notwithstanding the family's financial status– childhood
is the stage when the core of a man's future character
is usually forged. Here you shall see the author's
childhood is not just any other childhood. Juan
Cavila & his childhood memories with all its literary
merits, faces us to the writer who has succeeded in
creating a beautiful, spontaneous and agreeable story,
which through the following scenes enhances the Spanish
costumbrista genre, describing customs and manners.
