A
Cuban Tom Sawyer
I
can truthfully say that I have read and appreciated
Juan Cavila from cover to cover. I have really enjoyed
it as it reminded me of reading "Tom Sawyer"
and "Huckleberry Finn" in German translation
of course, in my childhood in Germany. It prove to
me that kids are kids all over, regardless of what
country.
Yes,
"boys will be boys" and Juan Cavila
and his companions were no different. I appreciated
the informal intimate style and the power of description,
so that one felt as if one was actually there. Thus
one gained an insight into Cuban life in the pre-Castro
era. "Tabacos" have been an essential
part of the Cuban history and economy. The author
gives a detailed insight into this Cuban tradition
and world renown quality for smokers.

Juan
Cavila and his Childhood Memories was a
delightful, enchanting biographical remembrance.
It has a universal appeal and relevance. Following
Juan Cavila through his formative adolescent
years should remind anyone, as it did me, of
that impressionable, inquisitive and explorative
age. Through Juan's experience we are transported
back to our own childhood years, even though
it may be a different time and different culture.
Parents and neighborhood adults, friendships
and pranks, fights and chastisement, schools
and teachers and homework, local excursions,
all these are among our own episodic universal
experiences. Juan Suárez (author) has vividly
portrayed these as eventful portals not only
for this period of his life but for entire life.
